Car Design at IED – Design School in Italy
Do you love cars? Do you intend to study Car design? Well, to pursue a career as a transportation designer, a professional has to be able to reconcile aspects of style, aerodynamics, feasibility, design and ergonomics. This kind of designer must have a profound understanding of the product and the functions that the consumer is looking for, so as to be able to have a clear idea about the relationship between design and marketing, innovation and commercial requirements.
The Bachelor degree of Arts in Transportation Design Car design offered by IED Turin has the objective to prepare professionals, principally concerned with designing the primary means of transport, to be capable of designing a number of different kinds of vehicle, in particular motorbikes, yachts and trains. The Transportation Designer has to be able to reconcile aspects of style, aerodynamics, feasibility, design and ergonomics.
Ranbir Kalha, former Transportation DesigCar design student tells us about his experience: “My passion for Car design led me to study Industrial Product Design. My strong desire to work on Car design, finally led me to IED Turin. Italy is renowned for many things, but for me its fabled history in car design is insurmountable and Turin is the heart of Italian car industry. I chose IED Turin, because the course not only builds all the essential skills right up from the core, like sketching, and clay and digital modelling, but it is also the closest to working with a car design department of a company”. Like many of his colleagues Kalha in the final year of his MA in Transportation Design – a second academic step for those who love car design – saw the development of his project in collaboration with a car brand, right from sketches to a show car at the Geneva auto show. “This experience is definitely unparalleled. No other college or university offers such an opportunity, along with the sufficient training to execute such a task. The choice was easy”, says Kalha.
The Istituto Europeo di Design is in its tenth appearance in Geneva, at the International Motor Show 2013 and offered to the public aunique experience by integrating the full-scale model with augmented reality last march with Gloria.
Gloria, a sport sedan, is the work of twenty students on the Master’s course – work experience IED.
Turin a.y ’11/12, the concept, created in collaboration with Alfa Romeo – coordinated by the car designer Luca Borgogno. The concept was the result of a process marked by various stages of assessment, simulating a real working situation: starting from twenty design proposals, ten were selected and created in clay in 1:4 scale. Finally, the one which best met the initial brief provided by the company was chosen from these ten.
Gloria (length 4700 mm – width 1920 mm – height 1320 mm – pitch 2900 mm) is a sport sedan with bold lines running along the side to the rear end. On the road, it would be powered by a latest generation V6 or V8 bi-turbo engine. On the bonnet, there is a strong reference to the Alfa Romeo shield sculpted from the car’s lines, emphasising the three-dimensional nature of the shapes. The front leather straps are reminiscent of the memorable leather boot straps of the brand’s historic cars.
At the Geneva Motor Show, the Istituto Europeo di Design stand also presented, through the projection of two videos, a selection of design proposals created respectively by the Undergraduate Degree in Transportation Design of IED Barcelona and by the Master in Transportation Design ofIED São Paulo.
